I can't say enough about this great lady, my Aunt Romegene. Sister to my mother Mary Ellen, she was always there for me and my siblings when needed. I remember circa 1948, holding her hand as she guided me to the University of Pittsburgh in Oakland to obtain my first pair of eyeglasses. During that time frame, she took me to Tampa Florida for a summer..truly a second mother to me.
We spent many hours talking about her stint in the Navy and since I was to spend 28 years in the Navy myself, we had a lot to talk about.
We will miss her, but never forget her.
With much Love,
Richard Keefe

I am so sorry for your loss. I would have loved to have known her as she was one of the exceptional women of her time who left home and joined the military. She and the other women were the first to "think outside the box" a long time before the term was popularized. They in turn put the first crack in the glass ceiling. Fair Winds and Following Seas, Shipmate!

My deep condolences on your mom. Sounds like she lived such a long and productive life till the end. Hopefully we will be that lucky. Much love from Chris and I.

Romegene was a wonderful lady. We met at a Memorial Day service several years ago & she gave me information on joining the WAVES. I enjoyed going to meetings and seeing her there, or sometimes driving her to our functions. Her kindness can be summed up in this story: shortly before Christmas of 2013, our unit had a party, hosted by a member that lives out in Murraysville. I drove Gene and another member, due to the inclement weather. When we returned to Brentwood, I accompanied her up to her garage, but discovered my poor choice in footwear all but guaranteed a fall and/or broken bone on the return trip to my car. Without a second thought, Romgene took off her sneakers and told me to wear them down the driveway, so I could get back to my car safely. I brought her shoes back the next day, and we had a good laugh, followed up by her good-natured scolding regarding my shoes. Some people give you the shirt off their backs; Romegene literally lent me the shoes off her feet so I wouldn't get hurt. That is just the kind of lady she was.

To Romegene's family, I am so sorry for your loss. I have known Remegene for many years as a member of our women's veterans group. She was a lovely lady and will be missed by all who were privileged to know her. Sincerely, Carol Hoyt
